In 1956, after completing his service in the U.S. Navy, Donald Wood joined his father in a partnership consisting of one towboat. From there, Donald built more boats, turned miles of river frontage into barge fleets, built New Orleans Shipyard, established Point Landing Fuel, a diesel distributorship, acquired sand pits and built a suction dredge named after his father, the M/V “W.B. Wood”.
Donald’s three children, Sarah Louise Ham, Donald Wood, Jr. and Pearce Wood joined their father in the 1980’s and added sand pits, expanded the range of construction materials for sale, installed ship mooring facilities and added the capability to perform maintenance dredging.
Included in the expansion of construction materials was the creation of Wood Materials LLC that was charged with the daily operations of the Luling/Hahnville, Waggaman, and Harahan sand pits. These sand pits sell the “Pump Sand” that is dredged from the Mississippi River. In 2009 we added #57, #610, and 4×1 crushed limestone along with other aggregates such as #2321 crushed concrete and railroad ballast to our product offerings. So today we are proud to offer a full range of products such as pump sand, pea gravel, crushed limestone, mulch, and garden soil to both commercial and residential customers. There is no job big or small where Wood Materials cannot offer solutions to your material needs.
The Wood family along with our team of dedicated and skilled employees remains committed to customer satisfaction by providing our customers the highest quality of materials and services for the greatest value along the Mississippi River.
