Our Soil Bulk Densities.

Below are the bulk densities of our soil products, measured at soil saturation levels. The reason for providing these weights at saturation level is to allow an understanding of the maximum weight of each soil as the soil has been receiving heavy rains every day for two weeks. Under less wet weather the weight of the material tends much lower. It is also important to note that these weights are not only at saturation level but also under high compaction. It is standard that the soil, both in place and under a load, will be far less compacted. By using both compaction and field saturation to determine bulk density we can provide our customers with a “worst case scenario” in regards to weight, allowing hauling and engineering specifications to be considered when planning a project. Bulk density is highly correlated with porosity and free air space. For reference, per US Composting Council guidelines, Topsoil (dry) averages 1.73 tons per cubic yard and finished compost is targeted at 1200 pounds per cubic yard.
